How the process works in 2026
The terminology has settled since this guide was written. What people call a fingerprinting or biometrics centre is officially an ICP Customer Happiness Centre, run by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security.
- Biometrics cannot be done online. The application and the payment can, but fingerprints and the photograph are captured in person.
- Age 15 is the threshold. Anyone 15 or over gives fingerprints; children under 15 need a photograph only.
- Do not turn up unannounced. Not every application or renewal requires a visit. If ICP already holds current fingerprints, the renewal can run fully online. Your application status tells you whether a visit is needed and which centre to attend.
- There is no separate charge. The appointment is covered by the application fee.
- If biometrics are required and you do not attend, the application stays Under Process indefinitely.
Booking and tracking
Sign in at icp.gov.ae or in the UAEICP app using UAE PASS, open your in-progress Emirates ID application and book the appointment there. You can also track the application with your PRAN, or call the ICP hotline on 600 522222.
